3 Simple Ways to Reduce Stress During Service
Peace Corps service is full of amazing experiences but it also brings challenges, a lot of challenges. From adjusting to a new culture to managing your projects, the emotional toll can wear out even the strongest person. But there are simple strategies that can help lower stress and bring joy. Borrowing from happiness coach Jessica Weiss’s advice, here are three ways Peace Corps volunteers can take control of their self-care while serving.
1. Start a Joy Journal
During service, small wins can make a big difference. Starting a joy journal is an easy way to stay mindful of positive moments.
At the end of each day, write down three things that brought you happiness and why they mattered. These moments don’t have to be big. Maybe a child in your village finally greeted you in the local language. Maybe the meal you cooked came out just right.
By training yourself to notice the good things, you can chenge your focus from what’s stressful to what’s going well. Over time, this habit can help boost your overall outlook.
2. Create Moments of Surprise Gratitude
Gratitude is powerful. And when you find ways to show it unexpectedly, it can deepen connections. As a volunteer, you rely on support from your host family, counterparts, or community members.
Take time every once in a while to share "surprise gratitude". A small thank-you gift can mean a lot, especially if it is a surprise.
Surprise gratitude doesn’t just lift the spirits of the person receiving it. It can also remind you of the strong support network you’re building - especially, in moments when you feel far from home.
3. Savor the Moment
Peace Corps service teaches you to slow down and appreciate life’s simple pleasures. Whether you’re watching a stunning sunset or laughing with a new friend, don’t let those moments pass by unnoticed.
Pause. Take a deep breath. Let yourself feel the joy and store that memory. This practice, known as "savoring", can build your happiness habit and make it easier to find the good even when things get tough.
Consider creating rituals around these moments. Take a quick photo, share the story in your next phone call home, or reflect on it in your blog. Savoring what’s good can help you feel more grounded and strong.
Embrace Joy During Service
Peace Corps life comes with it's own kind of stresses. But there are plenty of ways to lighten the load. By journaling, sharing gratitude, and savoring small moments, you can create a more joyful experience—even when challenges arise.
