10 Pieces of Advice from Arnold's '77 Lessons at 77' for Peace Corps Volunteers
Came across Arnold Schwarzenegger's "77 Lessons at 77" and decided to see if there were any lessons for Peace Corps volunteers. Here are 10 that I found that highlighted the importance of cultural sensitivity, flexibility, effective communication, personal development, and creating positive change in your host communities. Some of these lessons might help us address common challenges that we might encounter during our service.
(18) To make a real difference, connect with people on their terms. Find shared interests and experiences. Your impact will be greatest when working with those who are open to your ideas.
(35) Embrace diversity. In unfamiliar environments, it's tempting to stick with the familiar. Instead, engage with people who have different viewpoints. This fosters rich discussions and innovative solutions to serve your community better.
(53-54) Listening is your most powerful tool. Practice active listening twice as much as you speak. Many people simply want to feel heard and valued. By truly listening, you'll gain invaluable insights into your host community and build stronger relationships.
(61) Be honest with yourself, but stay positive. Reflect on your experiences and challenges without self-criticism. Approach self-evaluation as you would advise a fellow volunteer. This helps you learn from setbacks and plan effectively for future success.
(62) When overwhelmed, focus on small, achievable goals. For example, dedicate 5 minutes each to language practice, physical exercise, and reading about local culture. Track your progress daily, no matter how small. This builds momentum and confidence.
(67) Cultivate patience. Meaningful change and personal growth take time. Progress often comes in small steps, with occasional setbacks. Stay committed to your goals, celebrating small victories along the way.
(69) Find inspiration in differences. Your host community members, fellow volunteers, and local partners all have unique perspectives to offer. Embrace these differences as opportunities for mutual learning and growth.
(71) Combat feelings of hopelessness by helping others. Even small acts of kindness can make a significant difference. This reminds you of your ability to create positive change, no matter how challenging the circumstances.
(76) Strive to leave your host community better than you found it. This fundamental principle embodies the spirit of the Peace Corps and can guide your actions throughout your service.
